First president of Yemen – President for 34 years – Survived assassination attempt in 2011 – Allied with pro-Iran Houthi forces against internationally recognised government in 2014 – Turned against Houthis three days ago – Killed today by Houthi forces

Yemen’s reports indicate that former President Ali Abdullah Saleh died in clashes with the rival Houthi movement.
The al-Masirah television network, controlled by Houthi, has quoted Houthi officials as announcing the “end of the crisis of betrayal of the militia and the assassination of its leader”.
There was no independent confirmation, but the images broadcast on social networks seemed to show Saleh’s body.
His political party denied earlier that he died after Houthi fighters blew up his house in the capital, Sanaa.
Until last week, Saleh’s supporters had fought alongside the Houthis in a war against Yemen’s current president, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.
More than 8,670 people have been killed and 49,960 injured since a coalition led by Saudi Arabia, which supports Hadi, intervened in the conflict in 2015, according to the UN.
The conflict and blockade of the coalition also left 20.7 million people in need of humanitarian aid, created the greatest food security emergency in the world and caused an epidemic of cholera that would have killed 2,211 people since April
